Tobacco Tax (ne Excise)
Another money grab by the federal Govt of Australia. This time in the name of public health, specifically to reduce smoking and thereby reduce the incidence of cancer. What a lot of twaddle!!
Cancer is caused by many things and even though I am a smoker from way back before Mr Rudd was born, I cannot believe that smoking is the sole cause of cancer. It probably is a contributing factor in many cases.
Chemicals, foreign to our bodies, are more likely to be the main cause of cancers. Very small amounts of chemicals are used in pre-prepared foods as flavour enhancers, preservatives, colourings and so on. Many are known to have adverse affects on children who are ADHD or Autistic, even in a small way.
My thoughts are that the cocktail of chemicals we ingest with our packaged or pre-prepared foods is more likely to be cancer causing. No research has been done as to how much damage could be done to any of us by the cocktail of chemicals we find in our everyday foods.
Even the so-called fresh foods are not free of chemicals. Onions are sprayed with “No-Shoot” which has to be a chemical of some sort. Just to make sure that the onions don’t sprout on the supermarket shelves. Garlic is mostly imported and is sprayed with “methyl bromide” or some name like that. A lethal poison which has to be used to prevent any bugs from being imported with the garlic. And so it goes. The items mentioned are known to be used but I wonder how many other miniscule amounts of chemicals are used that no one knows about.
If we had just one chemical I think our bodies could cope with it quite well, but with the wide variety of chemicals being used in today’s foods, I would be very surprised if that mixture had no effect.
Tobacco may not be innocent, but let’s be fair and look at other causes of cancer. At least four of my old school friends have died from cancer, only one was a smoker. That tells me that the money grab is more important to the politicians than true Public Health.
