Public Health in Australia

March 4th 2010 02:06
Public Health in Australia.
Our public health system is a state of chaos and confusion is one way of describing it. With the advent of the American system of making a profit out of everything our system has disintegrated to a shambles. Part of the problem is centralised control where the decisions are made well away from the services supposedly providing health care for the Australian people. Another part is the emergence of Health Insurance companies by the dozen.

Our previous Federal Govt subsidised health insurance contributions to the tune of 30% of the premium. Sounds good? But is it? Fifty years ago there were very few health insurance companies operating because it was not considered profitable. We once had 3 companies involved in health insurance, now we have hundreds, only viable because of the taxpayers of Australia paying 30% of their holiday pay, their advertising budget, their wages bill, their office space costs and so on and on and on.

Meanwhile, with the added cost of centrally based unproductive administrators, multiple levels of management, etc ,taking money away from the health professional’s, the service provided to the general public ,who can’t afford to pay twice for their health care, diminishes steadily. The average taxpayer pays for the subsidy to the Health Insurance companies, then pays his individual contribution and even then should the poor bugger be hospitalised he still has to pay part of his Hospital and medical bills.
The Federal Govt has promised to fix the ailing health service by providing yet another bunch of beurocrats to supervise the distribution of Govt funding to the various Hospitals and health boards throughout the country. I ask you Mr Prime Minister – How the hell is another bunch of freeloading Govt employees going to fix anything. Stop playing politics and get on with the job you are paid to do: Govern the people FOR the people, not the bloody bottom line of the business community.

Good luck to all Australians who have the bad luck to become ill or injured. (You’ll need it)
