Pensions- Peoples and Pollies
July 6th 2010 02:50
Justice is blind, so they keep telling me; and I believe it.
I am an old age pensioner and to continue getting just enough money to keep me very close to the poverty line I must obey the rules, and I am even allowed to earn the princely sum of about $60.00 a week to supplement my pension; without losing some of it. Any amount above that $60.00 and my Govt allowance is reduced.
The average worker is expected to put at least 10% of his income into a “ Retirement Fund.” A commercial fund of course. That places his retirement money at the mercy of the totally untrustworthy share market. His chances of getting a good return on his investment are way out of his control, and he may not save enough by this method to retire. Share markets and international money exchange rates vary at the drop of a hat. There is no “Guaranteed” security for the eventual payout. Add to that the fact that he cannot draw that money until retiring age ( 65).
Where is the justice in that? The cost of Government is born by the taxpayer and members of the parliament are taxpayers, but it seems so unjust to penalise one part of society for making a few dollars, (the pensioners) and supporting another for doing the same thing. (the ex- politicians).
In this land down under where fair play is considered sacred to our way of life, shouldn’t there be one law for all, regardless of their perceived status in society.
Once again I state that our democracy only faintly resembles the dictionary definition of the word. Wild and fanciful claims are always being made about ‘democratic processes’, but seldom are they apparent in the overall scheme of things.
How about one or other of our Political parties making a real stand at election time for one law for everyone, one set of rules for everyone, and perhaps making Australia one nation for everyone in the process.
