On ‘Democratic’ Government
Would the members of the Major political parties please forgive me, you are all way past your use-by date.
Our ‘Party’ system of Govt is expensive, often counter- productive, and not much more than a public voice of big business interests. Why I say this is simple, big business pays for the electioneering propaganda freely distributed by campaigning would be politicians. Any business expects to get a return, preferably a profitable one, for money it invests, whether it’s for machinery, knowledge, of political favours.
When our ‘Westminster’ system was developed education was not as widespread among the general population as it is now, and the system had merit. Sadly the original concept has been tossed out and the modern interpretation is so corrupt ii is criminal neglect to leave it as it is. Neglect by us, the voters.
To avoid this happening and remove one of the avenues available to corrupt Parties I suggest that a one man one vote system be initiated, together with proportional representation of all parties by percentage of votes received. Supposing there five parties vying for 100 seats in Parliament. Party 1 gets 32%, party 2 gets 15%, party 3 gets 23% Party 4 gets 11% and party 5 gets 19%.
Party 1 would be in Govt but would have to Govern in co-operation with 68 members of other parties and would not at any time be able to pass legislation simply by Party rules. This would make the Govt of the day much more accountable to the people they are supposedly representing. Being more accountable would also remove a lot of avenues for corrupt practices to be carried out with impunity. I am aware this idea would be ridiculed by the major political parties because they are the ones who would lose their power.
The foregoing are my opinions expressed, I think, with the betterment of our quality of government in mind.
