Energy 2011
WE gobble up energy like there is no tomorrow, and if we keep using non-renewable resources to generate that energy, tomorrow may not be a given for some of us on this planet.
Coal, gas, and oil seem to be the mainstay of generating energy. Nuclear is used quite extensively too, but the waste created by the nuclear industry will become a nightmare for those who have to find a place to store it safely.
Coal is a terrible polluter of our atmosphere and strangely enough Coal Seam gas is not much better. Oil can’t be considered as we need every barrel to feed our transport systems and keep those Zillions of cars moving from place to place. [Including mine]
Coal is the most heavily subsidised industry in Australia. We poor citizens are spending untold millions of our dollars propping up the exploration, research and everything else that is not profitable in the coal industry. WHY? If those subsidies were removed the coal industry would have to use some of their vast profits to pay for their own exploration, research and development. That would make them think about reducing their pollution rates without burdening all of us with a new tax. {Carbon Tax} Perhaps our esteemed leaders could use that subsidy money to research alternatives to use for electricity generation. That would be something out of the box, a Government thinking of the people and not simply its own political future.
Coal Seam Gas is a new kid on the block. It does have the potential to utterly destroy thousands of acres of prime agricultural land for who knows how long. The gas itself is still a polluter of the atmosphere, just as coal is. Perhaps not to the same extent but, never the less, it is still a polluter. Why is our Government allowing this relatively new science to be tried out in such vast areas? If the damn stuff does destroy the agriculture in any area, it would be an economic disaster for that whole area, and maybe the whole country. It is expensive to set up and operate, its long term effects are unknown, and its benefits are limited. What is our Government doing, selling us all to the highest bidder?
I favour Solar energy generation, but I know that it too, causes pollution. The damn components use a lot of power to make, so it leaves a polluting footprint behind it. However, I see no other way at this point in time to produce what energy we need without polluting our skies even more than we are now. I would certainly not be considering very large generators, but smaller ones so that the endless lines of poles carrying the national grid for distribution of electricity could be dismantled and thereby save the consumers the massive cost of maintaining the damn unsightly things.
It would be possible to supply electricity to most of inland Australia by Solar generators providing there is some safe and effective way of storing the excess power generated during the day for use at night when the system is not generating. Is anyone doing any research in this particular area? Probably not, as there is no profit seen in it for the ‘investors.’ A sad fact of life in our money oriented society.
As far as Climate Change itself is concerned, we could be replanting trees, using less destructive methods to sow pasture grasses and generally helping Mother Nature restore what used to exist before we cut it all down to make bare paddocks in which to grow grain and other ‘commercial’ crops.
Have you noticed the pollution from volcanoes going into the atmosphere right now. More in one day than all the coal fired power generators put out in a year.
