Ecology and agriculture
I have been quiet for a while, reading up on whatever information I cam find about Coal Seam Gas Mining, and open cut coal mining.
The CSG mining companies want to drill 500 holes in the Pilliga State Forest to mine gas. That is bad enough in such an ecologically sensitive area, but in order to harvest the stuff they have to connect all those holes together with pipes to move the gas to where they can liquefy it for export to foreign countries.
The Pilliga is one of those areas where periodic bushfires occur. That is normal and after a normal fire Mother Nature repairs the damage and re-populates the area with wildlife. What will happen when the gas adds extra heat to the fires? NO ONE KNOWS, do they? I would suggest that after an out of control fire was finished burning everything burnable we would have a brand new area where the Pilliga State Forest used to be: the PILLIGA DESERT. Do we really need that damn gas so bad that we would allow mining of the stuff to destroy our forest areas. WE own it, not the Government. They manage our resources for our benefit, or do they? So far all I have heard is how much profit the mining company is going to make.
In Queensland there is already a big kafuffle about CSG and its effects on ground water. But then I read that one mining company wants to completely destroy and National Reserve just to make money by exporting Coal overseas. What a disgusting thing to even think about, let alone carry out. An ecologically sensitive place totally wiped out by an open cut coal mine and all we, the people, can expect to get in return is a giant hole in out country.
When it comes to agriculture no one knows what damage will be done to our agricultural industries. Corporate Greed seems to be running our Parliaments, or this situation could never have happened. I suspect that no research into the effects of CSG mining has ever been done, so we are in limbo, waiting for something to happen and wondering what disaster we will have face in the future. Floods and fires are more or less normal and although they do a lot of damage, the land recovers reasonably quickly. I doubt the recovery from poisoning everything with unknown chemical compounds to get gas out will be swift.
Let us all lean heavily on our political Representatives to stop wrecking our country. State and Federal Govts are both responsible for promoting the CORPORATE GREED that is in the news so much lately. Your country’s future is in your hands, speak out and leave something for your grandchildren.
