Carbon Pricing
Tony Windsor – MHR – Canberra
Dear sir, I regret deeming it necessary to write to you with regard to the carbon pricing scheme proposed by the current Government. I do not believe that such a move will do anything regarding climate change and absolutely nothing to reduce the rate of pollution being poured into our atmosphere.
1. The proposal is to put a price per ton on carbon emissions and make the polluters pay for their emissions. This move is supposed to put pressure on the polluters to reduce their emissions. It won’t happen. Why ?
2. Suppose I have a business which emits pollution and I am charged for every ton I emit, what do I do? I put the price up for whatever product I produce to offset the cost of the Carbon Price I am forced to pay.
3. My profit is back on track, so why would I spend money on reducing my emissions?
Point number two about the whole business of affecting climate change. The climate will change according to Mother Nature’s whim anyway, whether we waste time and money with stupid legislation, or simply do nothing at all. I believe we, in Australia, are supposed to be contributing 2% of the worlds pollution. No matter what we do, nothing will change until the rest of the world reduces its pollution. This garbage about being a leader in the field is political nonsense and is seen as such by many of us ordinary citizens.
I am not advocating doing nothing at all but I would suggest doing something positive that would help put pressure on the polluters. It is so simple really, promote active and positive research into green sources of energy.
Consider solar power. The biggest bugbear with generating solar power for the home and industry is how to store what is generated by day, for use at night. Batteries ? What sort of batteries? How many and at what cost.?
Find the answer to these questions and you may be able to dismantle many parts of the national grid and thus save millions of dollars in maintenance costs. Every rural property is paying through the nose for maintenance of that National Grid, yet each property must pay the cost of getting the farm connected to the Grid.
On top of that is has been said that one third of power generated is wasted in the Grid although the full costs are passed on to the consumers.
Think of the extra power that would be available for cities and large towns if the Rural Sector had a viable alternative which did not need miles of overhead transmission lines.
Your are in a unique position at present and it would be a wonderful thing if just one elected member of the house spoke out for something really positive for Australia.
The present approach is said to be market driven, or words to that effect. In actual fact it is nothing more than making another method by which investors( Those rich bastards from overseas) can make another dollar with doing a damn thing for the community or the environment.
Water trading did nothing and emissions trading will do nothing.
Yours sincerely
