Broad Band Internet

Broadband network
I would dearly love to see a good fast broad band network for all of Australia as soon as possible. So far we seem to have two choices.
Labour and 40 billion dollars with fibre optics to most reasonably closely settled areas. This also means that Australia will own the infrastructure and the commercial Internet providers will buy bandwith from us in Australia. This would give our Govt an income for the Infrastructure provided and, theoretically at least, repay the cost of building the network.
I could go along with that as we would get a return for the money invested.
Liberals want to subsidise the private sector to put in the infrastructure. This would mean we would be charged by the private companies for the cost of providing the infrastructure as well as the use of the service. Can we afford this?
Most IP companies are from offshore and our money would be going to somewhere else besides Australia. I may sound parochial, but if the money is made in this country, from the citizens of this country, I would like to see this country get the lions share of the profits, not some overseas outfit.
Is it Liberal policy, maybe their only real one, to promote the private sector business enterprises regardless of the overall impact on Australian citizens.
I spend a lot of time on the internet and so far get a reasonable deal from my provider. But I doubt that a commercial company controlling the infrastructure and charging like a wounded bull for its use will keep my reasonable deal affordable.
I currently enjoy high speed broad band internet, but I have a dreadful suspicion that a privately owned operator would put me back to dial-up simply because I could not afford anything of a higher speed.
Dial up is an expensive way for people to use the internet. The phone company charges a local call cost every time you dial-up to go online. My previous experience with dial-up was such that dial-up itself, plus the phone company charges for every time you dial-up amounted to the same cost as ADSL broad band.
Check your own area very well before you sign up. I shall leave you all to decide which way to go, but I know where I would like to be in this matter.
