After the Election

NSW Premier Elect –Mr Barry O’Farrell
Firstly, may I congratulate you for such a resounding win at the recent NSW election. Now comes the problems of Government you never felt as a member of the opposition. Not only must you Govern for the economic benefit of the State, you must appear to Govern for the people of the State, all of them. There are times when economics and people will be at odds with what you wish to achieve.
Some suggestions may be of value to you and your staff over the next four years. Who am I to give advice? I am a ‘no- one- in- particular’, there are a lot of us around the State of NSW, we vote, you know.
Do something constructive with the transport system. I know you promised to fix it, but that may well be impossible with the funds you will have available. But do something positive.
Stop the coal seam gas debacle until more information is available about the consequences of using chemicals to ‘fracc’ the coal and release the methane gas. I, and many more like me, do not believe this practice is viable in agricultural areas. Certainly the gas will provide some work and a lot of profit for overseas companies, but no one knows if the chemicals used will destroy the very soil of the mined area. I doubt that drilling the land full of holes like swiss cheese, pouring unknown and probably poisonous chemicals into those holes does not seem like a common sense idea to me. There is no more soil, just as there is no more water. Mother Nature gave us a certain amount and we have to look after it and use it wisely. Poisoning the soil and underground water supply is not looking after it.
The gas itself is not a concern, although it is only a short term thing for energy generation. The methods used to extract coal seam gas are what worries me. The science is relatively new and no one knows what will happen under the ground when poisonous chemicals are poured in to create a chemical re-action to release the gas from the coal. I would think that research into the generation by solar sources and storage of power, for use when the sun doesn’t shine, would be a much better option. Current technology can generate the required electricity but to date there is no economical and effective way of storing it for later use.
Another very important objective for your political party to work for would be the honest open Government so often talked about, but never delivered. A suggestion would be to involve all elected members of your political coalition to be part of the decision making process. I know, it would probably take a bit longer to reach a decision on policy making etc, but it would remove the power from those faceless individuals who shell out the big money for things like the sale of the people owned assets for one third of their value.( EG. The State owned electricity retailers.)
I feel that our very Government is being taken over, or at least influenced, by foreign enterprises. Really Long Link This link will take you to others more informed than I who feel the same. Corruption goes with foreign interference into our political system.
I am an old man and have seen most of Australia’s food manufacturing and processing industries sold to foreign companies and then closed up and the business moved offshore. I have seen the foremost agricultural and scientific research organisation hamstrung by politics and diminished funding, the CSIRO of course. I have seen Australia’s manufacturing capability reduced to almost zero and not because we are an inefficient manufacturer, but simply because the overseas money men can make bigger profits elsewhere.
You have been given a mandate by the people of NSW to be movers and shakers for the State, but remember that you are employed by the people of this State and should be loyal to those who pay your salary. I am aware of a lot of corruption in political and business circles even though I can’t prove it.
Give us a fair go Barry, that’s all we ask.
