Post Mortem - Bush Fire

July 2nd 2009 06:00

In February 2009 bush fires raged in Victoria causing millions of dollars worth of damage. Now comes the analysis of what went wrong. A Royal Commission, no less, is investigating the circumstances of the fires, why they did so much damage, took so many lives and what could have been done better

Fully Charged

July 1st 2009 04:28
.

Early sixties and I was contracting to a company that specialised in farm buildings- Hays sheds, machinery sheds, shearing sheds and any other kind required by a farmer. Christmas was closing in with a gallop and my workman decided to have an early holiday and quit. Only little me left and two sheds to complete by Christmas. Neither were big jobs and two men with experience could have them done in two weeks. I had the right equipment and tools. Bugger it, I'll do two small sheds on my own and still get off for Christmas

Rabitting On

June 27th 2009 02:54

It was the time of the rabbit plague and green grass was nowhere to be seen. Even dry tough old weeds were scarce. Those damn rabbits in their thousands had eaten everything that was not poisonous to them except the Prickly Pear bushes which were also a pest. New growth on trees was eaten as was new seedlings from any shrubbery as soon as it showed above ground.2

Over the 'Hill'

June 23rd 2009 05:05

Did you know that there is a whole world of people 'over the hill?' I don't mean there's a lot of old codgers there. Perhaps I'd better explain

Under The Window

June 23rd 2009 01:10

Coming home from the middle of nowhere, hot Australian summer, long distances and eyes tired from watching for potholes in the dusty road. A weatherbeaten sign says, MEALS Rest Rooms and Public Bar. Too tired to care one way or the other. We pull over and stop.

Land of the Free

June 20th 2009 03:22

Of course we are free, just like many others countries, we are free to do as we wish, with the proviso that we do not break the law, of the land. Now there's thing, what is the 'Law of the Land'? How would I know, I only live here, and I find it very confusing.
Our Nation started as a place where England could send its unwanted sons and daughters to empty the jails in the mother country and thus avoid the cost of feeding or burying its criminals

That 'Electric ' Feeling

June 17th 2009 04:04

Throughout the world the demands for electricity is continually growing. Power for homes, factories and communications networks. There is a push from Govts to reduce the pollution given off when power is produced, which I agree with, ostensibly to alleviate the global warming we are all being warned about. However, no one seems to be concerned about how much its costs to distribute this power to the consumers, nor how much of what is generated is wasted in the power lines.

Australia - My Homeland

June 12th 2009 07:38

The archeologists say that Australia is one of the most ancient of land masses on our planet. Before the time of the dinosaurs, and well before the advent of man, an extended range of mountains was pushed up from below the seas, huge volcanoes built further mountains. A land of plenty was built. A temperate climate ensured that a plethora of animals and birds made their homes here. During the eons of time between then and now, climate change and the action of the elements had dramatic effects.

Water - That life giving stuff

June 11th 2009 03:38

I know there is plenty of water on our planet, so does everyone else. But it is either salty or in the wrong place. We are running out of usable water. We are human and our bodies are 65% water, to maintain life we need water.
