Once a Year

May 13th 2012 02:49
Once a year
Yep, once a year we are told by the government how well off we are under the current ‘difficult’ circumstances. [The Budget] It seems we are not doing too badly when compared to other developed nations around the world. But are we all that well off?? Right now, I would say we are doing OK, but tomorrow we may not be. Our two stage economy is not set on a good foundation. We used to have that, but a previous prime minister, [Little Johnnie] sold off all the profitable income generating businesses we once had so he could boast he had created a ‘Budget Surplus.’ His current counterpart, in Opposition at this moment, is trying to set himself up to do the same thing: - boast of a ‘Budget Surplus’. Just one small problem:- What is he going to sell to offshore interests?

There’s nothing left to sell. All the manufacturing has already gone, the miners are rapidly depleting our natural resources, our water supply is difficult, [ that’s normal]and our technological inventions are grabbed as soon as possible by offshore interests. I think it is criminal that even our canned veggies are produced offshore now. Our good old Aussie brands have been bought out, closed and the produce grown and processed offshore with our tried and trusted brand names still on them

Sham Democracy

Sham Democracy
It is not strange that the Labour Party copped such a hiding in the Queensland election. The power of the party is imposed from the top, rather than grown from the bottom. Ordinary people have no say as to who their representative shall be; they are given a candidate selected by the upper echelon of the party. Mind you, the Coalition is not far behind in self destructing their party the same way.
What happened to the process of democracy? The one where the people of the electorate nominated their candidate and the head office accepted the people’s choice, and supported their effort in every election. Has it all gone by the board? Are we all subject to the whims of the few at the top end? If that is the case, and it seems to be, then what is called democracy, is a sham

P-E-P

Politics > Economics > People.
The local, State and Federal political scene is still fraught with corrupt practices in my opinion. Sadly, many of my friends feel as I do. Not the elected representative, per se, but the back room power brokers and the political advisors who take salaries from the taxpayer and big business interests as well. Why else would big business ‘donate’ so much money to Political parties? Anyone in business knows that they expect a return for monies ‘invested’ in Political Party affairs

CSG EXTRACTION

CSG Extraction
Now the potential for polluting of agricultural land and water supplies is beginning to be exposed in the USA. Look at this article in the ABC’s news section and make your own assessment as to whether CSG Extraction in Australia is a viable industry. Really Long Link
It would be a crime against our country to allow such destructive and polluting practices to be continued here. Remember we live on the driest inhabited island on the planet and water is crucial for our very survival. No one knows what pollution will occur, no one knows how long it would last and no one knows what to do to try to restore the pristine condition of our land and water once it has been polluted

Gas and Agriculture

Gas and Agriculture
It would seem that there are many people now concerned about Coal Seam Gas Mining and its effects on the land and the water in that area. The ABC has even set up a web site specifically for investigating CSG operations, scientific theories and promises made by the mining companies re the safety of CSG mining operations.
Look here for more detailed information:- Really Long Link

Watch Out - NSW

Watch Out
Watch out NSW, privatising the electricity will guarantee much higher prices than if the whole infrastructure remains State owned. By State Owned I mean owned by the people of NSW, not the office wallahs in Sydney who pose as politicians.
Consider the reality of a sale, bearing in mind that the Generation of electricity makes a profit already, a profit for the NSW people

Population and Food

Population and food
Isn’t it grand? Our world population will be SEVEN BILLION after the weekend is gone. How are we going to feed that many people ??? Certainly not by digging holes in good farming land to make a fat profit for some greedy wealthy sods who call themselves ‘investors’. Yes, coal seam gas mining is the topic once again. The general population is constantly being told a lot of ‘untruths’ about the effects of CSG mining. They say, as do the pollies who are in their pockets, agriculture and CSG can co-exist with benefits for both. WHAT RUBBISH!!!
CSG mines cut into the very heart of agriculture, they reduce the amount of land available for growing food quite severely for a start. Then, no one knows what damage they will do to the underground water supplies we depend on, nor do they have even the vaguest idea of how long any pollutants they pour into our soil will take to dilute enough to return our water back to somewhere close to what we now have

Ecology, Agriculture & Coal

Ecology and agriculture
I have been quiet for a while, reading up on whatever information I cam find about Coal Seam Gas Mining, and open cut coal mining.
The CSG mining companies want to drill 500 holes in the Pilliga State Forest to mine gas. That is bad enough in such an ecologically sensitive area, but in order to harvest the stuff they have to connect all those holes together with pipes to move the gas to where they can liquefy it for export to foreign countries

False economics

False Economics
Coal Seam gas mining is as false as it can be when it says the miners will care for the environment and the agricultural land in which they are drilling holes. They, the miners, will NOT be able to compensate the country for any loss of agricultural land due to their accidental pollution of either or both the land itself, or the underground water supplies.
Miners think of compensation in terms of the purchase price of the land, but that is not the most worrying problem. It’s the productivity of the land over many years which is the greatest problem. Supposing a 1000 acre farm has an income of $100 thousand a year and that land is polluted for 100 years by the poisons used by the mining company in its operations. What is the real value of compensation which should be paid? A million or so for the current land value as estimated by friends of the mining company, or the loss of productivity for 100 years? I would go for the latter option and I would add to that, all the other income generated by the produce from that farm, Transport, processing, manufacturing, retail sales, and so on. A very difficult task for some number cruncher to work out, but probably in excess of about five times what the farmer’s income would be

Complaining Convoy

Complaining Convoy
Well, here we are on Monday the 26th Day of August 2011, and what have we got in our halls of power to give us hope? - - - - - - - - - - - - I thought so; nothing. We have elected 150 representatives to take care of our country for the three year term of Government. What have we got?
We have a minority Government. Labour and Greens, plus a couple of Independents are trying to instill their wishes on the country. The big problem is that the elected members are not in control, the big business enterprises are. The so called ’Power Brokers’ have taken away the rights which Democracy insists belong to the elected members. Only the favoured few elected members have any say at all, the majority are silenced
